ITS 12 YEARS SINCE DR REMMY ONGALA DIED - let's remember some of the events



It is twelve years since Dr Remmy Ongala died on Sunday 12th December 2010 around midnight at the Regency Hospital. A few days prior to the fateful day Dr Remmy had been hospitalized at the Muhimbili Hospital, he had problems with diabetes and combined problems and was discharged from the hospital, but he developed new complications and was admitted into the Regency Hospital where he met his death.
Dr Remmy's burial was scheduled for Thursday 16th December 2010.

Burial ceremony timetable –Thursday 16th December 2010

10:00 –Dr Remmy’s body would be transferred from Muhimbili Mortuary to Biafra Grounds in Kinondoni

-       Prayers,

-       Music festival,(Gospel Music and rhumba music)

-       Viewing of the body

14:00 – Transferring the body to his home in Sinza

16:00 – Burial at Sinza Cemetery

 

Wednesday 15th December The Wake

Two sets of musical instruments were set outside the late Remmy's home. Musicians began performing Remmy’s songs, The whole night was a continuous night of music remembering Remmy's life

Burial Day

 Dr Remmy's body being brought to the Biafra Grounds. The car carrying the body was escorted by two police motorcycles

 After the body arrived on Biafra grounds, the coffin was placed on a special mini stage under a white tent. Bands began performing including The Disabled Band. Gospel musicians sang a special song they had composed for the late Dr Remmy.

 Among those who attend this ceremony was the Minister of Information Sports and Culture Hon Nchimbi, Members of Parliament of Kinondoni and Ubungo Hon Iddi Azan and Hon John Mnyika. Judge Johna Mkwawa, representatives from the National Arts Council, Copyright Society of Tanzania, Federation of Artists and many artists. One of the saddest moments was when Dr Remmy's song Siku ya Kifo - On the day of my death was being played







After a speech by Cosmas Chidumule on behalf of musicians and the Minister of Information Sports and Culture on behalf of the government, hundreds of people lined up to view Dr Remmy for the last time.

 Then the crowd moved to Sinza  and at the Greek's Hall more people got a chance to view the body again

At 4 O'clock as planned in the timetable, the body arrive at cemetry and Dr Remmy Ongala was buried. His words , 'Binadamu nyama ya udongo' - Man is food for the soil- came to pass.
